My family moved around quite a bit growing up, so I was always the "new kid on the block" and constantly had trouble fitting in. Bullies had a field day with me and matters became so bad that I started faking being sick so that I could miss class. So this issue has really been concerning me with our new one...

I guess the key is like Phil says, to be aware of what your kids are going through. My parents never really knew what was going on until it progressed to the principal's office - something that took a whole school year. I hope to avoid a similar situation. Perhaps you could keep us informed on any strategies you come across...

I was a fat kid too, and that bullying from 30 years ago still haunts me at times. My confidence levels are, obviously, much higher now, but those feelings of being an outsider will always be there. And it affects how I parent. I am very aware of what is going on with my kids when they are around other children, and I don't hesitate to step in to stop teasing and such. If my kids never have to suffer bullies in their young lives, they'll be better for it when they're older. Now is when they develop their self-confidence. I don't want them to be hamstrung in that department like I was.
